Per Glockenschlag wurde den Bergleuten der umliegenden Zinnbergwerke die Tageszeit sowie Schichtbeginn und Schichtende verkündet. Das Läuten erledigte ein ausgedienter Bergmann, der als „Anläuter“ bezeichnet wurde und in einem Häuschen neben dem Turm wohnte.
